In Confirmation we come to be filled, through the laying on of hands, with the power of the Spirit for worship, witness and service. Therefore the Bishop addresses the candidates and all present with:
"You, who have already been baptized and have now come to be confirmed, must with your own lips and from your heart declare your rejection of all that is evil".
The candidates have to answer in the affirmative on the following questions:
- Do you renounce the devil and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God?
- Do you renounce the evil powers of this world which corrupt and destroy what God has created?
- Do you renounce all sinful desires that draw you away form the love of God?
The Bishop will then proceed to say to the congregation:
God of all mercy, look on them
Put to death their sinful desires
Grant them the life of your Spirit
Enable them to overcome the evil one
Give them every Christian virtue
Bring them with your saints to everlasting glory
Apart from the other procedures included in the seremony of Confirmation, the Bishop concludes:
we pray for your servants
upon whom we have now laid our hands
May your fatherly hand ever be over them
your Holy Spirit ever be with them
Sustain them continually
with the body and blood of of your Son
and so lead them in the knowledge
and obedience of your word
that in the end
they may enjoy the fulness of eternal life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
